The Week Ahead: Fed, ECB, Jobs — and the Yen Line

September 6, 2026 · Market Preview · By Stock Golden Expert

Sunday preview of a week that could set the tone for the rest of 2026.

The Federal Reserve and the ECB both meet within four days of each other, bracketing the month’s most consequential data. Markets enter the stretch with the dollar near its highs, gold near 4,400, equities at records, and bitcoin at $78,000 — every asset priced for its current story to continue. Weeks like this either validate everything or break something.

The Fed: hawkish hold is the base case

Expect no change in rates, and expect the statement to keep “data-dependent” language firmly intact. The market will hunt for clues on the first cut — specifically whether the committee’s dots still point to easing this year. Any erosion in that signal would extend the dollar’s run; any confirmation would spark the year’s biggest short-covering rally in EUR/USD.

The ECB: forced into the easing debate

Eurozone inflation has drifted low enough that holding without acknowledging the option to cut is becoming untenable. A dovish tilt pressures the euro toward 1.1325. A surprise pushback (unlikely) reverses months of damage in one session.

And the yen

USD/JPY starts the week near 156 after September’s violent first week. The 152.90 line survived Monday’s test, but the carry trade is wounded and the BoJ meets later this month. Any resolution in the Fed meeting that moves US yields will hit this pair first and hardest.

Positioning advice for the week: half size into Wednesday, pre-planned reactions for both outcomes, and no hero trades before the statement. The market will still be there Thursday.
