Gold Roars Back to $4,180: The 4,100 Defense Holds Again

Yesterday’s panic is today’s afterthought.

Just 24 hours after testing $4,095 — the level we called the line that must hold — gold has ripped back to $4,180, its biggest one-day rebound since August. The fourth defense of the 4,091–4,100 zone has succeeded, and the metal’s autumn story has flipped from funeral to comeback in a single session.

What turned it

The dollar blinked. The greenback stalled at its highs on Tuesday — EUR/USD bounced a full cent off 1.11, and USD/JPY slipped back below 158 — and gold, coiled like a spring after three weeks of compression between 4,091 and 4,259, did what compressed markets do. The shorts that had pressed the metal toward 4,095 were forced to cover into a market with no sellers left, and the move fed on itself.

Positioning did the rest. With speculators flat-to-short after September’s purge, there was simply nobody left to sell the rally. Volume confirmed it: the rebound came on the heaviest buying of the month.

What happens now

The range’s ceiling at 4,259 is the next test, and Thursday’s US CPI will decide whether gold gets there this week. A soft inflation print weakens the dollar further and could send the metal through 4,259 toward 4,400 in a hurry. A hot print slams the door and probably sends it back to test 4,100 — for a fifth time.

For now, the map is simple: the year’s most important support has held for a fourth time, the seasonals (October–February is gold’s strongest stretch) have kicked in, and the risk-reward favors the bulls above 4,091. The bears had their shot at 4,095. They missed.
