S&P 500 Drops 1.1%: Biggest Single-Day Slide Since June

The streak is over.

The S&P 500 fell 1.1% on Tuesday, closing at 7,719 — its biggest one-day decline since the June correction and its first decisive break below 7,800 in six weeks. Volume jumped 25% above average, giving the drop real sponsorship. For the first time since August, the dip-buyers didn’t show up in the afternoon.

What broke the calm

Three inputs, one result. First, the dollar: EUR/USD at 1.12 and the yen sliding again raised fresh fears about the earnings translation hit — exactly the risk we flagged as earnings season opened. Second, the first big bank reports delivered solid numbers but cautious language on consumer credit, and the market chose to hear the caution. Third, positioning: with the index within 0.5% of its record and a month free of meaningful pullbacks, the market was a coiled spring of profit-taking waiting for an excuse. Tuesday provided one.

The internals confirmed the shift: decliners outnumbered advancers three-to-one, and the equal-weight index fell harder than the cap-weighted benchmark — the first time leadership has narrowed on a down day since the summer.

Is this the start of something bigger?

Not yet. Corrections need either a macro shock or a credit event, and neither exists. Credit spreads are calm, earnings are still growing, and the index remains 6.5% above its June low. What Tuesday likely marks is the end of the free-money phase of this rally — the period where every dip was instantly bought.

Levels: 7,693 (Tuesday’s low) is the first support that matters; below it opens 7,600. Resistance: 7,800, which should now attract sellers on the first test. Respect both. The easy trade is behind; the disciplined one remains.
