Gold Slides to 4,186: The August Rally Unravels

September 7, 2026 · Gold News · By Stock Golden Expert

Gold’s magnificent August is being unwound, fast.

The metal has fallen from its late-August peak near 4,558 to a low of 4,143 this week, closing near 4,186 — a decline of more than 8% in seven sessions. The summer recovery, which had carried gold from 3,955 to within sight of the June breakdown at 4,578, has stalled at the gate.

Why the rally failed at 4,578

Three reasons, all visible in advance. First, the dollar: the greenback’s stall proved temporary — EUR/USD has slid back toward 1.160 and USD/JPY’s violent round trip has kept the dollar bid overall. Second, the calendar: September’s Fed meeting and jobs report pushed real yields back up, and real yields are gold’s true master. Third, positioning: August’s rally drew in momentum buyers who were never going to survive the month’s first volatility, and their exit is what’s accelerating the decline.

What’s technically at stake

The bull case isn’t dead — but it’s on the injured list. The metal has fallen back to test the breakout zone at 4,143–4,215. Holding there keeps the recovery structure intact: a base above 4,000 with higher lows from July. Losing it opens a return to the summer range floor near 4,000, and below that, the June low at 3,955 awaits with all its psychological weight.

The honest read: gold remains a market that needs a dollar top to launch, and September’s first week delivered a dollar resurgence instead. The story is deferred, not denied — but deferred stories don’t pay carry, and this metal pays none at all. Patience remains the only position that fits.
