Gold’s September Slump: Three Culprits, One Verdict

September 17, 2026 · Gold Analysis · By Stock Golden Expert

Gold’s September has gone from disappointment to rout: the metal has fallen from 4,396 to near 4,200, and every attempt at a bounce has been sold within hours. Assigning blame is easy — there are three culprits, and they all point the same way.

Culprit one: the revived dollar

August’s dollar stall is history. The greenback has ripped to new highs across the board — EUR/USD is through 1.148, USD/JPY has recovered to 157, and the dollar index is at its strongest since April. For a metal priced in dollars, this is the equivalent of gravity increasing. Nothing else matters until it stops.

Culprit two: the Fed repricing

The September Fed meeting delivered the hawkish hold the market feared: rates unchanged, and the committee’s tone pushed the expected first cut further into the future. Real yields responded by rising, and gold — which pays no yield — re-priced lower mechanically. Every basis point of real-yield increase subtracts from gold’s fair value, and September added plenty of basis points.

Culprit three: momentum’s revenge

August’s rally drew in trend-following funds near 4,500–4,558. When the tide turned, those same funds sold with the same discipline they bought, turning a correction into a cascade. The 8% decline is as much about who owns gold as why it’s falling.

The verdict

All three culprits share a common dependency: US data. Firm data feeds the dollar, the Fed, and the momentum. The next employment report is the metal’s only near-term hope — a weak print cracks all three at once. Support: 4,143, then 4,074, then the dreaded 3,955. The summer’s recovery thesis is on life support; the autumn needs a miracle from the BLS.
