Gold at 4,200: Stuck in No-Man’s Land

4,198.

That’s where gold closed the week — down marginally for October, 10% below the August recovery high, and 15% below April’s record. The metal has spent three weeks pinned between 4,091 and 4,259, and the longer this compression lasts, the more violent its eventual resolution will be.

The bull case, on its last legs but alive

The recovery structure from the summer — higher lows from 3,955 — technically survives as long as 4,091 holds. Central banks keep buying. Speculative positioning is clean after September’s purge. And the metal is entering its historically strongest season (October–February), where two of its best rallies in recent memory began. If the dollar’s run breaks — and every crowded trade eventually does — gold’s snapback could be ferocious, with 4,578 and then 4,783 as magnets.

The bear case, quietly strengthening

The dollar is at its highs, real yields are rising, and the Fed has pushed cuts into next year. Each week of dollar strength erodes the recovery thesis, and the metal’s inability to rally even as equities wobble suggests the safety bid has moved elsewhere — into the dollar itself. Below 4,091 lies 4,000, and below that, 3,955, where the year’s entire bull case gets retried.

The map

Compression between 4,091 and 4,259 resolves one of two ways: an October breakout above 4,259 (seasonal, positioning, dollar-squeeze assisted) targeting 4,400+, or a break of 4,091 that sends the metal back to test 4,000 and the summer’s hard-won base. Both are tradeable. What isn’t tradeable is the middle — which is where the market has parked itself for three weeks.

Gold is waiting for the dollar. So is everything else.
