Stocks Stall Below Records as Earnings Season Gets Underway

The S&P 500 spent Monday holding its breath.

The index closed at 7,805 — down a token 2 points from Friday, and 39 points below Tuesday’s all-time high of 7,844. Three sessions of near-perfect stillness, right as third-quarter earnings season opens with the big banks reporting Tuesday and Wednesday. The market is waiting for corporate America to tell it whether record valuations are justified.

What’s at stake in the reports

The consensus expects single-digit profit growth, but the market’s real question is about the dollar. The greenback’s surge to its strongest level of the year — EUR/USD at 1.12 handles, a multi-year low — threatens to shave meaningfully off translated international earnings, which make up roughly 40% of S&P revenue. Banks will report first, and their commentary on trading revenue, loan quality, and CEO sentiment about the economy will set the tone for the two hundred companies that follow.

Breadth remains the bulls’ best friend: the equal-weight index continues to track the benchmark, and small caps have held their summer breakout. But momentum has clearly stalled at the highs, and the first big guidance miss of the season could knock the index back toward 7,700 quickly.

Levels into the prints

Support: 7,786 (Monday’s low), then 7,693. Resistance: 7,844, the record. A breakout requires earnings confirmation; a breakdown only requires one bad guidance day. Position for the former, respect the latter — and let the banks speak before doing anything aggressive.
