Gold Tests $4,095: The Line That Must Hold

4,095.

Gold traded down to that number on Tuesday — within $140 of the year’s low — before closing at 4,108. The metal has now given back two-thirds of August’s recovery rally, and it has arrived at the level that separates a bad quarter from a broken trend.

Why 4,091–4,100 matters so much

Three times this year, gold has found buyers between 4,091 and 4,100: in July, in late September, and now. A fourth successful defense would confirm this zone as the market’s consensus fair value — the price at which the world’s central banks, ETF investors, and dip-buyers collectively agree the metal is worth owning. A failure would be different in kind, not degree. Below 4,091 lies 4,000, then the June capitulation low at 3,955, and a break of that level would put the entire 2024–2025 bull market on trial.

The forces colliding here

The seller is the same as it’s been all quarter: a dollar at its highs and real yields rising into Thursday’s CPI. But the buyers have a new argument — seasonality. October through February is historically gold’s strongest stretch, and two of the metal’s best rallies in recent memory began in exactly this window. Also, the speculative community is now flat-to-short after September’s purge; there’s nobody left to sell but the dollar bulls themselves.

The trade

Long gold here is a bet that 4,091 holds for a fourth time, with a stop below 3,955 defining the risk. It’s a tradeable bet, not a comfortable one. But the risk-reward — roughly 140 dollars of defined downside against 400-plus dollars of upside to the August high — is the best the metal has offered all year. Thursday’s CPI will likely make the decision for everyone.
