S&P 500 Slides Again: Two-Day Drop Deepens to 2.4% From Record

The selling didn’t stop at one day.

The S&P 500 fell another 1.1% on Thursday, closing at 7,659 and touching 7,632 intraday — a two-day decline of 2.4% from Tuesday’s record of 7,844, on the heaviest back-to-back volume since the June correction. The dip-buyers that rescued every decline for four months have gone quiet for a second straight session.

What’s driving the slide

Earnings season is delivering the answer the bulls feared. The early bank reports were fine on paper, but guidance across the first wave of reporters has turned cautious — and the reason keeps recurring: the dollar. With the greenback at its highs, a growing chorus of multinationals is trimming overseas revenue expectations, and the market is repricing the “earnings resilience” thesis that justified record valuations.

There’s a second force: the October calendar. Mid-October routinely brings both earnings-driven volatility and quarter-end repositioning, and this year the two have stacked on top of a crowded trade — equity positioning was near cycle highs coming into the month. Crowded longs plus cautious guidance equals exactly what we’re seeing.

How serious is it?

Strip away the headlines and this is, so far, a normal correction: 2.4% from the high, credit spreads still calm, and the index holding well above its 50-day average near 7,500. What would change the diagnosis: a close below 7,600, which opens the August consolidation zone at 7,508, and below that the serious support at 7,314. Above, 7,700 is the first resistance — reclaimed, the bulls can argue this was just earnings-season noise.

Corrections are the price bull markets charge for admission. Pay it with stop discipline, not panic.
