The Dollar’s Revenge: Euro Below 1.115, Gold at $4,000, Bitcoin Under $80K

Tuesday morning dashboard: six days ago, the dollar looked beaten — down for two straight weeks, with the euro at 1.127, gold testing $4,220, and bitcoin celebrating a breakout. This morning, the entire landscape has flipped back, and the speed of the reversal says something important about the market we’re in.

The euro has broken below 1.115, trading at 1.1142 after touching 1.1140 in the early session — its weakest level in ten days and a full cent below last week’s high. Gold sits at $4,008, fresh off a break below $4,000 that ended its four-month floor. Bitcoin trades at $79,524, back under the $80,000 line for the first time since before last week’s breakout. Sterling has retreated from its 1.34 highs to 1.3313. Only the yen bucks the trend, with USD/JPY back up at 157.75 after last Thursday’s dip to 156.10 proved, once again, temporary. The greenback hasn’t just recovered; it has reasserted.

What actually happened in six days

The reversal has one driver and one amplifier. The driver is the repricing of the Federal Reserve. Two weeks of soft US data and gentle Fed language had revived the market’s belief in a year-end rate cut — the belief that powered the dollar’s slide, gold’s rebound, and bitcoin’s breakout. This week’s data took that belief back. The week’s readings on the US economy came in firmer than expected, and with them went the pricing of easing. When the cut disappears from the curve, the rate differential that supports the dollar widens again, and every dollar-weakness trade built on the cut thesis loses its foundation simultaneously. That is what we are watching unwind this morning, across every market at once.

The amplifier is positioning. Each of last week’s counter-dollar moves — the euro at 1.127, gold at $4,220, bitcoin above $84,800 — had attracted a fresh cohort of trend-followers betting on the dollar’s decline. Those positions are now all underwater together, and the unwinding of crowded trades doesn’t happen politely. It happens the way this morning looks: fast, correlated, and indifferent to the individual stories of each market.

The equity market’s telling exception

The one market that hasn’t joined the reversal is the one that matters most for the broad economy. The S&P 500, after holding its retest of 7,612 on Friday, bounced to close Monday at 7,677 — its third close above the correction zone in four sessions. Stocks have effectively decoupled from the dollar’s resurgence, and the reason is the one this column has tracked all month: the correction that hit equities was driven by dollar strength squeezing earnings, but the earnings season has now largely absorbed that message, and the buy-the-dip reflex has reasserted itself at the levels that mattered. Equities have stopped being a dollar trade — which, if it persists, is the healthiest development in the entire market.

What the reversal means for each market

For the euro, 1.1140 is the immediate battleground. Below it, the old 1.1114 low from mid-October comes into play, and a break of that level would restore the autumn downtrend in full. Above, the recovery must reclaim 1.1200 to argue that last week’s rally was more than a squeeze.

For gold, the $4,000 handle is everything this week. Friday’s close at $4,007.90 kept the metal technically above the line, but this morning’s softness shows the buyers are tired. A weekly close below $4,000 opens $3,955, then $3,850. The four-month range is dead; the market is now in price-discovery mode to the downside, with structural buyers likely waiting much lower than where the fast money sold.

For bitcoin, the floor test is here. $79,524 this morning is the seventh approach to $80,000, and the character of each approach has degraded. A daily close below $79,000 — the October 12 low — would complete the failed-breakdown pattern and target $77,400, then $75,200. The structural story remains intact, but structure is a floor, not a ceiling, and floors get tested precisely when stories are weakest.

The bigger picture

Zoom out one more level and this week crystallizes the regime that has governed 2026: the dollar remains the sun around which every other market orbits. Two weeks of dollar weakness produced synchronized rallies in gold, crypto, and the euro; six days of dollar strength has unwound nearly all of them. For traders, the practical conclusion is as old as the market itself — in a dollar regime, trade the dollar first and everything else second, because everything else is just the dollar’s shadow. For the rest of October, the watchlist is short and clear: the Fed’s next communication, the euro at 1.1140, gold at $4,000, and bitcoin at $80,000. Those four lines will write the month’s final chapter, and this morning, all four are being tested at the same time. Rarely does the market offer a cleaner map. What it demands in return is the discipline to follow it.
