Gold Holds $4,180 as Safe-Haven Bid Steadies the Metal

October 16, 2026 · Gold News · By Stock Golden Expert

While equities slid for a second day, gold did exactly what insurance is supposed to do.

The metal held firm on Thursday, trading as high as 4,220 before settling at 4,181 — its third consecutive close above 4,100 and its strongest weekly finish since late August. The fourth defense of the 4,091–4,100 zone earlier this week is now looking like the bottom of a genuine recovery, not just another bounce.

The divergence that matters

Gold’s week is best understood next to the stock market’s. The S&P 500 has fallen 2.4% in two sessions; gold is up nearly 2% over the same stretch. When the metal rises while risk assets fall, the buying is coming from portfolio hedging, not speculation — the most durable kind of demand there is. ETF flow data supports it: physical gold funds have now recorded five straight sessions of inflows, the longest streak since the August peak.

Dollar fatigue is the fuel

The greenback’s rally is finally showing cracks away from the yen: the euro has bounced to 1.12 handles, sterling has broken above 1.33, and the dollar index has stalled at its highs. Gold and the dollar remain mirror images, and the mirror is tilting gold’s way for the first time since August. Real yields, the metal’s other nemesis, have stopped rising into quarter-end.

Levels

The week’s work: 4,220 resistance, then 4,259 (the September breakdown point), then 4,400. Below, 4,120 and the all-important 4,091 — now tested four times and holding. Gold enters the final week of October with momentum, seasonality (October–February is its historical strong season), and a stock market doing its marketing for it. The bears had four chances to break this market. They failed four times.
