Below $80,000 Again: Bitcoin’s Failed Breakout Turns Into a Range Test

Weekend edition: the question that hung over crypto all week has been answered, and the answer is the one the bears were hoping for.

Bitcoin closed Sunday at $80,024 — its second consecutive finish a hair above the psychologically immense $80,000 line — after a weekend that took the token as low as $79,147. The failed breakout that began last Thursday has now consumed six sessions, retraced 98% of the move from $84,835, and returned the market to the exact place it started: sitting on the floor of the two-week range, deciding whether that floor still exists.

Six sessions that erased six hours

The speed of the round trip deserves reflection, because it contains the week’s real lesson. Wednesday’s breakout — the one that cleared $84,800 on record volume and had this column sketching measured-move targets toward $89,600 — lasted precisely one closing session. Thursday erased it. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday spent grinding lower on declining volume, each session’s high lower than the last, until the market arrived back at $80,000 with the same question it faced two weeks ago. The entire episode, from compression to breakout to failure, took nine days and produced nothing except a lot of transferred money from late buyers to patient sellers.

The mechanics of the failure are now well understood. Wednesday’s breakout candle, for all its record volume, attracted sellers at exactly the level where two weeks of trapped inventory waited for an exit. Thursday’s reversal came on the dollar’s reawakening. And the subsequent grind lower has been a textbook distribution pattern — lower highs, fading volume, bids thinning at each test of the floor. The range traders who faded Wednesday’s spike and re-bought Friday’s dip have had a profitable fortnight; almost everyone else has paid for the education.

The state of the floor

Everything now hinges on $80,000 — a level that has now been tested, in some form, seven times since early October. The scorecard remains unbroken: every test has been defended. But the tests are getting closer together, the recoveries are getting shallower, and the quality of the buying at each test has visibly degraded — spot-led demand that once absorbed entire sell-offs within hours now takes a full session to stabilize the price. That’s what distribution looks like in its final phase: not a dramatic break, but a gradual exhaustion of the buyers’ urgency.

The structural supports haven’t disappeared, which is why this isn’t yet a breakdown thesis. ETF flows turned modestly positive again late last week after two days of outflows. Long-term holder supply continues to rise. Leverage remains far below the levels that made the May crash so violent. But structure provides a floor under corrections, not a guarantee against them — and a seventh test of $80,000 is not the same proposition as a third.

The week ahead

Three scenarios are live. The first, and still the base case by the slimmest of margins: $80,000 holds for an eighth time, the range survives, and bitcoin grinds back toward the middle of the $80,000–$84,800 structure over the coming week. The positioning data mildly favors this — sentiment has swung bearish fast enough to become a contrarian input.

The second scenario: the floor breaks with a decisive daily close below $80,000. The measured-move target of the range then projects to roughly $75,200 — a level that would also complete a full retracement of the July advance and probably trigger the next wave of systematic selling. Anyone long should know their exit before this scenario arrives, not after.

The third scenario is the one nobody is discussing: a third attempt at the breakout. Failed first attempts at major levels are common; failed first attempts followed by successful third attempts are how most of bitcoin’s biggest rallies began. If the floor holds this week and the market rebuilds above $82,000 with spot-led volume, the breakout story reopens — and the bears who declared victory on Sunday will discover they were celebrating the halftime score.

Weekend levels: support $79,147, then $77,400; resistance $81,956, then $84,800. The range has been the trade for two weeks and remains the trade today. What has changed is the fee: each test of the floor costs the bulls a little more of their credibility. Markets forgive failed breakouts; they rarely forgive failed floors. This week, the market finds out which one it’s dealing with.
