Bitcoin Rejects $82,000: The May Crypto Selloff Deepens

May 14, 2026 · Crypto News · By Stock Golden Expert

Bitcoin’s May rally is dead, at least for now.

The token touched $82,792 on May 6 — its highest level of 2026 — and has been sliding ever since. Tuesday’s close near $79,080 leaves BTC down roughly 4.5% from that peak and, more concerningly, below every short-term moving average that mattered on the way up.

The anatomy of the fade

Three things changed in the second week of May. First, the flow: spot ETF demand, the market’s main engine this year, cooled noticeably. Second, the macro: the dollar’s grind higher is a headwind for every risk asset priced in greenbacks, and crypto is the highest-beta expression of that relationship. Third, the structure: leverage had built up fast during the April–May run, and leveraged rallies unwind the same way every time — slowly, then in a hurry.

The $76,000–$78,000 zone has absorbed three separate tests this month and held each time. That zone is now the line between a healthy correction and something more serious. A decisive break targets $74,000, then the April pivot near $70,500.

The honest read

Nothing in this selloff challenges the structural crypto story — institutional adoption, regulatory clarity, the halving-era supply dynamics. But structure is a long-term argument, and the market is making a short-term one. Respect the tape, size accordingly, and let the $76K zone do its job — or fail in full view.
