Gold Taps 4,363: Capitulation or the Start of Something Worse?

May 28, 2026 · Gold News · By Stock Golden Expert

4,363.

Gold hit that number on Wednesday — its lowest price since October — before rebounding sharply to close at 4,499. A 3% intraday round trip of that size, on rising volume, is what capitulation often looks like in its first act.

The case that the low is in

Capitulation selloffs share a fingerprint: a vertical decline, a climax low, and a violent recovery that catches the shorts offside. Wednesday checked all three boxes. Add the positioning data — speculators have cut their gold longs by more than half since April — and you have the ingredients for a durable bottom. The metal also reclaimed its 200-day average by the Friday close, a first since the decline began.

The case that it isn’t

The dollar. Nothing in gold’s recovery happened because the dollar weakened — EUR/USD at 1.1653 and USD/JPY at 159.27 both say the greenback is still firmly in command, and gold’s spring decline has been, almost entirely, a dollar story. If the dollar’s uptrend extends into June, gold’s lows will likely be retested regardless of Wednesday’s drama.

Trading it

The range is now well-defined: 4,363 below, 4,627 above. Inside that range, the metal is a trade, not a position. Longs with stops below 4,360 have defined risk and a decent story; a break of 4,627 would confirm the bottom and target 4,783. Below 4,363, the chart opens toward 4,200 and the gold-bull thesis goes back to the drawing board for the summer.
