Mid-Year Portfolio Check: Rebalancing Your FX-Gold-Equity Mix

July 6, 2026 · Investing Strategy · By Stock Golden Expert

We’re halfway through 2026, which makes this the traditional moment for an honest portfolio review. Not a prediction exercise — an allocation exercise. Here’s a framework.

Start with what the first half taught

The H1 scoreboard: US stocks up mid-single-digits, gold down sharply, bitcoin down 18%, and the dollar up nearly everywhere. If your portfolio leaned hard into the 2024–2025 playbook — weak dollar, strong gold, endless crypto — the first half hurt. If you held plain US equity index exposure, you did fine. The lesson isn’t that one strategy died; it’s that macro regimes rotate, and the rotation turned without asking permission.

The three questions

Has your allocation drifted? A 60/35/5 stock-gold-crypto mix that started the year is probably closer to 65/28/4 now — drift that quietly raises your risk. Rebalancing isn’t a market call; it’s hygiene.

Are your hedges actually hedging? Gold was supposed to be the portfolio’s insurance. It’s down 17% from its peak while stocks sit near records — a reminder that gold hedges dollar debasement and crisis, not “rates stay high.” Know what each position is for; positions without a job are just risk.

What’s your dollar exposure? With the dollar up all year and positioning stretched, the easy dollar gains are behind us. This is the moment to trim dollar hedges that were added when the greenback was cheaper — hedges, like everything else, should be bought on weakness.

The boring conclusion

Mid-year rebalancing forces you to sell what went up and buy what went down — mechanically, unemotionally, against every instinct. That’s exactly why it works. The market’s biggest gift in July isn’t a trade; it’s the calendar reminder.
