S&P 500 Stalls Near 7,500: Earnings Season Preview

July 9, 2026 · Stock Market News · By Stock Golden Expert

The S&P 500 opens the second half parked at 7,490 — up 0.1% for July, up modestly for the quarter, and completely directionless for a month. The next catalyst arrives next week, when the big banks kick off earnings season.

What’s expected

Consensus calls for mid-to-high single-digit year-over-year earnings growth — solid, but a deceleration from the double-digit pace of recent quarters. The setup has two competing currents. Tailwind: the economy has remained resilient, and revenue beats have been reliable all year. Headwind: margins face the strongest dollar in months (which cuts translated overseas earnings) and still-elevated input costs. Watch the guidance more than the prints: with the index near records, stocks are priced for companies to raise outlooks, not merely meet them.

The dollar wildcard

Here’s the variable earnings models can’t ignore: USD/JPY at 161.9 and EUR/USD at 1.14 imply a dollar drag on roughly 40% of S&P revenue. If management teams guide conservatively because of the currency, the market will have to choose between forgiving them (rates are the Fed’s fault) or punishing them (guidance is guidance). Historically, markets forgive dollar-driven misses about half the time. Flip a coin, or better — watch the first three big reports before positioning.

Levels into the prints

Support 7,314 (July’s low), then 7,240. Resistance 7,582 (June’s high). A breakout either way on earnings confirmation — not ahead of it — is the higher-probability trade. Let the companies tell you which story is true.
