How Gold, the Dollar and the Yen Interact in a Crisis

August 12, 2026 · Forex Education · By Stock Golden Expert

Three assets dominate every financial crisis: gold, the dollar, and the yen. Understanding how they interact — because they don’t move in lockstep the way beginners expect — is essential market literacy.

The hierarchy of safety

When genuine panic hits, the market sells everything liquid and buys the dollar first. It’s the world’s funding currency, the deepest market on earth, and the asset every debt on the planet is denominated in. This is why “crisis” and “dollar up” are synonymous — even when the crisis is American in origin, as 2008 proved.

The yen is the second refuge. As the carry trade’s funding leg, a global risk-off event forces repayment of yen loans, creating mechanical yen buying. The stronger the carry trade was going into the crisis, the harder the yen rallies during it. July’s 800-pip surge was this mechanism in action.

Gold is the third refuge — and the slowest. In the acute phase of a crisis, gold often falls with everything else as levered holders sell it to meet margin calls (see March 2020). Its outperformance comes later, in the aftermath, when the policy response (rate cuts, QE, fiscal expansion) debases the currencies gold competes with.

The practical map

Acute panic: dollar up, yen up harder, gold down then flat. Aftermath: gold up, dollar down, yen retraces. Recovery: everything normalizes, and the carry trade quietly rebuilds.

Knowing which phase you’re in matters more than knowing the crisis itself. Most investors buy gold during the panic — the worst entry — and sell it during the recovery, just as the debasement trade begins. The framework above is the antidote: watch the dollar and the yen; they’ll tell you which act of the play you’re in.
