Gold’s Quiet Crash: Why the Metal Keeps Bleeding Lower

May 18, 2026 · Gold News · By Stock Golden Expert

4,483.

That was gold’s low on Friday — the cheapest the metal has been since January, and a full 8.8% below April’s peak of 4,918. For an asset that spent the past two years as the market’s favorite hedge, the speed of this decline is remarkable precisely because it’s been so quiet. No panic, no capitulation volume. Just steady, methodical selling, week after week.

Who’s selling, and why

The likely answer: the same macro funds that bought gold as a dollar-debasement trade are now unwinding it as the dollar strengthens. Gold’s 2024–2025 rally was, at its core, a bet that US deficits and Fed easing would erode the greenback. When the dollar rallies instead — as it has all spring — that trade unwinds mechanically. It’s not about gold; it’s about the thesis.

The problem for bulls: those macro funds were the marginal buyer. Central banks buy on dips, but slowly and at fixed schedules. They don’t arrest selloffs; they just set a floor under them. And the floor keeps getting tested — 4,522 in April, 4,483 on Friday.

What would turn it around

A dollar top, full stop. EUR/USD at 1.1642 and USD/JPY at 158.9 show the greenback still in command, so the wait continues. On the chart, gold needs to reclaim 4,650 to stabilize; below 4,450, the next real support is 4,363 and then the psychological 4,200.

Bull markets correct. But corrections in crowded trades overshoot. Stay patient, stay light.
