What a Strong Dollar Does to Your Portfolio: The FX Linkage Explained

May 19, 2026 · Forex Education · By Stock Golden Expert

Most investors think about the dollar as background noise. In 2026, it’s the lead instrument — and whether you trade FX or not, its spring surge is already affecting everything you own.

Channel one: your stocks

Roughly 40% of S&P 500 revenue comes from abroad. When the dollar rises, those foreign earnings translate into fewer greenbacks, compressing margins and reported profits. It’s why the index’s strong May has been led by domestically-focused sectors while the big exporters lag. If you own US multinationals, you are short the dollar whether you realize it or not.

Channel two: your gold

Gold is priced in dollars globally, so a stronger dollar mechanically pushes the metal down — same gold, fewer dollars per ounce. Add rising real yields (the return you forgo by holding a non-yielding asset), and you have gold’s entire May selloff explained in two sentences. Bullion’s 8% slide isn’t a mystery; it’s arithmetic.

Channel three: your emerging markets

Dollar strength tightens financial conditions everywhere outside the US. Emerging-market currencies weaken, dollar-denominated debt becomes harder to service, and capital flees toward American yields. If you hold EM funds, watch the dollar the way sailors watch the barometer.

The takeaway

You don’t need to trade EUR/USD to have a dollar view — you already have one baked into every position. The useful question isn’t “will the dollar rise?” but “what does my portfolio lose if it does?” Hedging starts with that answer.
