The Yen Reversal: What Happened and What Comes Next

July 27, 2026 · Forex Analysis · By Stock Golden Expert

The yen finally pushed back, and it pushed hard.

USD/JPY crashed from Monday’s open at 163.79 to a Friday low of 155.26, settling the week at 157.58 — an 830-pip collapse that ranks among the sharpest yen rallies in years. The carry trade, rebuilt so confidently through mid-July, has been gutted for the second time in three months.

What actually happened

The honest answer combines three forces. First, positioning: yen shorts were at record extremes, and the pair had stalled at a politically charged level — the perfect setup for a squeeze. Second, the trigger: heavy selling erupted during Monday’s Tokyo session with characteristics consistent with official action — speed, size, and zero accompanying news. Tokyo hasn’t confirmed or denied, which is itself informative. Third, amplification: once 162 broke, option barriers and margin calls took over, and the decline fed on itself.

The cross-market transmission

EUR/JPY collapsed from 187.3 to 181.9 — an enormous move in a normally placid cross. AUD/JPY and the EM crosses fared worse. Notably, the dollar held up fine elsewhere: EUR/USD actually rose to 1.1544. This was a yen event, not a dollar event, which matters for how you position the aftermath.

What comes next

The 2022 and 2024 templates say: intervention-era yen rallies last weeks to months, not years, unless the BoJ changes policy. The market will now watch the BoJ’s next meeting with singular focus. A hawkish shift makes 150 a real target; another hold makes 160+ a matter of time.

The carry trade isn’t dead — the rate gap that feeds it still exists. But it’s wounded, and wounded carry trades demand smaller positions and wider respect. Both apply here.
