Gold’s August Liftoff: The Metal Finally Finds Its Mojo
Gold has woken up.
The metal closed July at 4,107 and has spent the year’s first days of August pressing higher, clearing 4,150 with ease. For a market that spent June in freefall and July in a coma, the change in tone is striking — and the drivers finally look organic rather than mechanical.
What’s changed
Three things. First, the dollar’s rally has narrowed to a single pair: while USD/JPY remains elevated post-shock, EUR/USD has stopped falling and the broad dollar index has flatlined. Gold can live with a firm dollar; it cannot live with a rising one. Second, real yields have plateaued after a relentless first-half climb, removing the metal’s most reliable nemesis. Third, the safe-haven bid is returning: with the yen shock fresh in memory and equity valuations stretched, asset allocators are quietly rebuilding the insurance sleeve of their portfolios — and gold at 4,100 is 17% cheaper insurance than it was in April.
The technical picture
The base that formed through July — higher lows from 3,955, shrinking volatility, failed breakdowns below 4,000 — is resolving upward. The first objective is 4,215 (July’s high); above that, 4,400 and then the June breakdown zone at 4,578 come into play. A monthly close above 4,400 would convert the correction thesis into a new-leg thesis.
What to respect
The trend is still technically down until 4,578 falls. And a second leg of the July yen shock — or a September Fed surprise — could send the dollar ripping again, dragging gold back toward the base. Buy the strength, but keep the June low on a pedestal: below 3,955, this recovery story is over.
