Pound’s Last Stand at 1.32: Can Sterling Hold?

GBP/USD is sitting at 1.3211, and the level directly below — 1.3200 — has become the most important round number in the majors right now.

Why 1.32 matters so much

Three reasons. First, it’s been tested repeatedly: 1.3210–1.3211 marked the lows in both late September and early October, and each test has held — so far. Second, it’s the last support before 1.3143 (the June low) and then the psychologically huge 1.3000. And third, sterling is the market’s highest-yielding G10 currency; a decisive break below 1.32 would signal that even carry can’t protect a currency in this environment, which would rattle the entire FX complex.

The domestic picture is actually mixed

Here’s the frustrating part for sterling bulls: UK data hasn’t collapsed. Growth is mediocre but positive, inflation is cooling slowly, and the BoE remains on hold with a hawkish lean. The pound’s slide is almost entirely a dollar story — the same dollar story dragging the euro to multi-year lows. EUR/GBP at 0.8540 is basically unchanged over the past month, proving the point.

That cuts both ways. If the dollar’s run pauses, sterling bounces hard — high-beta currencies always do. But if the dollar keeps running, sterling will break 1.32 regardless of what the Bank of England says.

The trade

Range traders: 1.3210 has been buyable three times with stops below 1.3180. That’s a trade with defined risk. Breakout traders: a daily close below 1.3200 targets 1.3143, then 1.3000 — and given the momentum in the dollar, I’d expect that path to be fast if it opens.

Either way, the answer comes from Washington, not London. Watch the US data, and let sterling be the expression.
