Stocks Shrug Off FX Chaos: S&P 500 Stays Bid Near Records

September 9, 2026 · Stock Market News · By Stock Golden Expert

The most remarkable market statistic of September so far isn’t in the FX market — it’s in the equity market’s refusal to care about it.

While the yen careened through its second 600-pip shock of the quarter and the dollar ripped to new highs, the S&P 500 has spent the week calmly consolidating near 7,650 — less than 2% below its August record of 7,816. Two years ago, a carry-trade shock of this magnitude would have produced a 5% equity drawdown in days. This time, the VIX barely touched 15.

Why equities are immune (for now)

Three explanations, in ascending order of importance. First, earnings: the Q2 season proved the economy’s resilience, giving dip-buyers a fundamental reason to hold their nerve. Second, positioning: equity investors are invested but not levered — the leverage this cycle lives in FX and private credit, not in equity margin. Third, and most important: the equity market has learned, through two years of rewarded dip-buying, that policy responds to stress. The “Fed put” may be out of the money, but nobody believes it’s gone.

The risk in the calm

Complacency is a strategy that works until the day it doesn’t. The yen shock is transmitting somewhere — into Japanese equities, into EM FX, into the carry community’s risk budgets. If the transmission eventually reaches credit spreads (still eerily calm), equities will rediscover their correlation with the rest of the world in a hurry.

Levels: above 7,600, the path back to 7,816 is open. Below 7,508, the August consolidation low, the FX stress starts mattering. Until one breaks, respect the tape — it’s earned it.
