The 600-Pip Reversal: USD/JPY Craters From 164 as Sellers Finally Strike

July 28, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

It finally happened.

After weeks of warnings in this column about crowded yen positioning, USD/JPY has reversed violently — from an intraweek high of 163.94 on Monday to a low of 155.26 by Friday, before settling at 157.58. That’s an 870-pip intraweek range, the largest since 2024, and it has obliterated a month of carry gains in four sessions.

What triggered it

Pinpointing a single cause is a fool’s errand, but the ingredients were all visible in advance: extreme positioning, cheap yen volatility, a pair pressing against a politically charged level at 164, and a market that had run out of new buyers. The spark appears to have been a combination of official jawboning and a large options expiry that forced dealers to sell into a falling market. Once 162 broke, the stops did the rest.

Whether the Ministry of Finance actually bought yen is almost beside the point — the market behaved as if it did, and in FX, behavior is reality.

The cross-market fallout

EUR/JPY crashed from 187.3 to 181.9 in a week. AUD/JPY and the other carry crosses suffered worse. Meanwhile EUR/USD actually benefited — rising from 1.1416 to close the week at 1.1544 — because the selling was yen-specific, not dollar-specific. When the carry trade unwinds, it unwinds against everything.

What’s next

Two scenarios. If this was intervention-plus-positioning, the pair will stabilize around 156–158 and eventually grind higher again — that’s the 2022 pattern. If it was the start of a genuine repricing of BoJ policy, 152 and then 148 come into play.

The tell will be the bounce. Strong recoveries reclaim 160 within days. Weak ones stall below 159. Watch that line — it’s the whole trade right now.
