August Chop: Dollar Stalls as Summer Liquidity Kicks In
August has arrived, and the market is doing what it usually does this month: nothing, loudly.
EUR/USD is trading at 1.1556, up marginally from last week’s close of 1.1544. USD/JPY at 157.89 has spent four sessions bouncing between 156.8 and 159.0 without conviction. GBP/USD at 1.3491 is exactly where it ended July. Three pairs, three shrugs.
Don’t mistake quiet for safe
August liquidity is famously thin, and thin markets produce exaggerated moves on modest flow. The professionals’ August playbook is well known: cut size, widen patience, and treat every breakout with suspicion until volume returns in September. The retail playbook is often the opposite — and August account blowups are a tradition for a reason.
What the cross-rates say
EUR/JPY at 182.5 is well off the July panic low of 181.3 but far below the 187 peak — the market is quietly rebuilding yen-funded longs at better levels. That reconstruction is the tell: the carry community believes the shock is over. If they’re right, USD/JPY grinds back toward 160 over the next month. If they’re wrong and 155.30 breaks, the second leg down will be faster than the first.
This week’s calendar
Midweek brings a batch of services-sector data across the major economies. In a normal month, second-tier releases like these barely register. In August, they can move markets 50 pips on a rounding error. Trade smaller, or trade after the releases, but don’t trade into them with size.
