Q4 Preview: The Four Scenarios That Will Decide the Dollar

September 28, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

The fourth quarter starts this week, and the dollar enters it in its strongest position of the year. Here are the four scenarios that will decide whether that lasts.

Scenario one: US soft landing confirmed (dollar mildly lower)

If US growth cools just enough to bring the Fed back toward the table without alarming anyone, the dollar’s rate support erodes slowly and EUR/USD grinds back toward 1.16–1.17. Probability: 25%. This is August’s story revived, and it requires US data to cooperate — which it hasn’t for six weeks.

Scenario two: US strength persists (dollar higher)

The current regime simply continues: firm US data, stagnant Europe, wide rate gaps. EUR/USD tests 1.1100 and possibly 1.0900; USD/JPY retests 160+. Probability: 40%. It’s the base case precisely because it’s the path of least resistance — no new information required.

Scenario three: US data breaks (dollar lower, fast)

A genuine US slowdown — not a soft patch, but a break — would flip everything. The dollar would fall hard against everything except, probably, the yen. Probability: 20%. The trigger would be unmistakable: two consecutive weak jobs reports or a recessionary ISM print.

Scenario four: risk-off shock (dollar and yen both bid)

A geopolitical or financial accident sends the market into deleveraging mode. The dollar rallies on safe-haven flows; the yen rallies harder as carry unwinds; everything else falls. Probability: 15%. Unknowable in timing, inevitable in occurrence — the only question is whether 2026’s number comes up.

Positioning for uncertainty

Notice what’s missing: any scenario where the euro leads a recovery. Europe’s data would need to genuinely surprise, and there’s no sign of that. The euro’s fate in Q4 is a dollar decision, not a euro one — which means trading EUR/USD is, functionally, trading your view on America.

Trade small into quarter-end flows this week. October has a habit of amplifying whatever September started.
