Aftershocks: Yen Volatility Refuses to Fade

September 11, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

Just when the carry community thought the worst was over, the yen delivered another lesson.

USD/JPY spiked down to 152.90 on Monday — matching the July low to the pip — before rebounding to close the week at 153.42. The weekly range of 154.99 to 152.90 looks small only because it followed last week’s explosion. In any normal year, a 500-pip weekly range in the dollar-yen would be the story of the month.

What Monday’s low tells us

152.90 held — twice now. That’s significant. Double-tested lows on heavy volume often mark the end of a liquidation phase, because everyone who needed to sell has sold. The bounce to 157.99 during the week (before the fade) suggests there was real dip-buying beneath the panic, not just short-covering.

But I’d be careful about calling a bottom. The euro has started to roll over — EUR/USD fell from 1.1628 to close at 1.1594 — and when the dollar starts rising broadly while the yen also strengthens, it usually signals risk reduction across the entire market. That environment is hostile to carry in all its forms.

The volatility market’s verdict

Yen implied volatility remains roughly double its summer level. Options desks are not pricing calm ahead — they’re pricing another shoe. Whether that shoe drops depends mostly on whether 152.90 survives the next test, and on what the Bank of Japan says when it meets later this month.

For traders: this is a range-trader’s market between 152.90 and 158.00, with breakout trades reserved for those with iron stomachs. Size down. The yen is not done being interesting.
