Gold Breaks 4,500: The June Selloff Nobody Hedged

June 3, 2026 · Gold News · By Stock Golden Expert

4,500 has fallen.

Gold closed Tuesday at 4,467 — its lowest finish since October and a jarring sight for anyone who bought the metal this year as portfolio insurance. From the April peak of 4,918, bullion is now down 9.2%, and the decline is accelerating: June’s first three sessions alone have erased what May’s dip-buyers spent four weeks building.

The sellers aren’t who you think

Central banks aren’t selling — their reported purchases remain robust. ETF holders aren’t panic-redempting either; the big gold ETFs have seen modest but orderly outflows. The selling is coming from macro hedge funds unwinding the “debasement trade,” and from momentum accounts that were long gold as a trend trade and are now long no longer. It’s positioning, not panic. That’s actually the good news: positioning washes out fast.

The bad news: the dollar shows no sign of topping. EUR/USD at 1.1536 broke to new lows for the move, and real yields keep grinding higher. Gold’s pain has one primary author, and it’s still writing.

The levels that matter now

Below, 4,363 (May’s capitulation low) is the last meaningful support before 4,200 — a level that would mark a full 15% correction and probably trigger the “is the bull market over” headlines. Above, 4,560 must be reclaimed before the metal can stabilize.

Corrections in bull markets are normal. What’s not normal is ignoring them. If you own gold as insurance, check whether your insurance premium is still worth paying — that’s what a 9% drawdown is for.
