July Wrap: The Month the Yen Trade Finally Broke

July 31, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

July will be remembered as the month the yen finally pushed back.

USD/JPY ends the month at 157.58, down over 6 yen from Monday’s peak of 163.79 — a stunning reversal that wiped out eight weeks of carry-trade gains in four days. The euro, meanwhile, posts its best month since January: EUR/USD closes July at 1.1544, up from 1.1369, as the dollar’s summer run came to an abrupt halt.

The month’s three acts

Act one: the grind. For three weeks, the dollar climbed relentlessly — USD/JPY to 163.9, EUR/USD pinned near 1.14, the market pricing nothing but American exceptionalism. Act two: the break. A violent, trigger-light collapse in the yen that took the whole dollar complex down with it. Act three: the stabilization. The final days saw choppy, two-way trade as the market searched for a new equilibrium.

Sterling booked a solid month too, closing at 1.3492 after dipping to 1.3273 in the post-shock chaos. The pound’s ability to hold its gains while the yen melted says everything about the relative-strength story that’s driven sterling all year.

August watchlist

Thin summer liquidity meets a repositioned market — historically a recipe for whipsaw. Key levels: USD/JPY 155.30 (the July low) and 160.20 (the recovery ceiling). EUR/USD 1.1500 (breakout confirmation) and 1.1555 (the July high). GBP/USD 1.3500 and 1.3650.

One parting thought: the carry trade dies a thousand rumored deaths before its real one. This month’s reversal was violent but, so far, a positioning event. The real funeral requires the rate gap to close — and on that front, nothing has changed.
