Month-End Preview: Positioning for a Loaded September
With August closing on Friday, positioning for September deserves more thought than usual — because this September carries an unusually heavy load.
The calendar stack
Five events dominate. One: the Federal Reserve meeting, where the market will parse every word for timing on the first cut. Two: the US employment report, the single most market-moving data release in FX. Three: the ECB, where the easing debate becomes concrete. Four: quarter-end rebalancing flows, historically dollar-supportive in the final week of September. Five: the return of full liquidity after the summer — September’s ranges are routinely 40% wider than August’s.
The cross-asset setup entering it
Stocks at records (S&P 7,686) with solid breadth. Gold in a confirmed recovery near 4,480–4,600, testing the June breakdown. Bitcoin at $78,000, one level below trend repair. The dollar stalled but not broken; USD/JPY the only pair still trending. Carry trades rebuilt but scarred. Every major market enters September extended in its own direction — which means the month’s surprises will find crowded trades on every side.
The playbook
First, cut gross exposure into the Fed. Event risk with stretched positioning is the classic recipe for air pockets in both directions. Second, respect the September seasonals: fade late-August momentum moves, don’t chase them. Third, pre-define the levels that matter — for the S&P it’s 7,505; for gold 4,578; for bitcoin $82,800; for EUR/USD 1.1712 and 1.1500. Breakouts on September volume deserve trust; August’s thin-tape signals do not.
The market’s summer story is ending. The autumn one begins with more information, more volume, and more danger. Be ready for all three.
