The Quietest Week in FX Is Telling You Something

May 22, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

Some of the most useful market signals don’t come from price. They come from the absence of it.

This week’s ranges across the majors were the narrowest since February: EUR/USD barely moved 70 pips from high to low, USD/JPY wandered between 158.6 and 159.3, and GBP/USD spent five days stuck between 1.338 and 1.351. For anyone who started trading in the volatile years, this feels strange. It’s also completely normal for late May.

What low volatility means

Compressed ranges are energy building. Think of a coiled spring — the longer price consolidates, the more violent the eventual breakout, because stops accumulate on both sides and positioning gets lazy. Big moves are born in quiet markets, not loud ones.

The last time ranges were this tight was mid-February. Three weeks later, USD/JPY swung 500 pips. I’m not predicting a repeat, but the historical rhyme is worth respecting.

How to trade it

Three practical rules for stretchy summer markets. First, cut your position size — the same stop distance costs you more in a quiet tape because breakouts gap. Second, stop chasing middles; in compressed ranges, the edges are the only trades with decent risk-reward. Third, have a plan for the break before it happens, because when these ranges let go, they let go fast and the fill you get is rarely the fill you wanted.

EUR/JPY closed the week around 185.1, smack in the middle of a three-month range. When that range breaks — and it will — the carry trade community will notice.
