September’s Crosscurrents: Five Things to Watch This Month
September arrives with every major market extended, every central bank on deck, and a calendar loaded enough to move all of them. Here are the five things that matter most.
1. The Fed meeting
The single biggest event. The market wants clarity on the first rate cut; the Fed wants optionality. The gap between those desires is where volatility lives. A hawkish hold (likely) extends the dollar’s advantage; any hint of a cut timing revives everything that’s been crushed by rates: gold, the euro, crypto.
2. US employment
The jobs report lands the week after the Fed and could render the meeting moot. The dollar trend needs US data strength to survive; a genuine downside surprise (sub-100K payrolls, rising unemployment) would be the first real crack in the year’s dominant trade.
3. The ECB’s dilemma
Eurozone inflation is drifting down while growth stagnates. The ECB’s September meeting forces the easing debate into the open — and every dovish sentence drags the euro toward the June lows at 1.1325.
4. The 152.90 yen line
USD/JPY’s twice-tested low is the market’s most important technical level. Above it, the carry regime limps on. Below it, systematic deleveraging threatens everything from AUD to bitcoin. Watch it daily.
5. The crowdedness check
Positioning across every asset is one-sided: dollar longs, equity dip-buyers, gold recovery longs, crypto momentum chasers. September’s higher volume will test all four simultaneously. The first crowded trade to break will drag the others.
Framework for the month: respect the trends, halve the size, and let the Fed set the tone. Everything else is commentary.
