Yen Explodes: USD/JPY Crashes to 152.90 on Historic Selloff

September 7, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

It happened again — and this time, the market can’t pretend it’s a one-off.

USD/JPY crashed on Monday to a low of 152.90, exactly matching July’s panic bottom, before rebounding to the mid-154s. The speed of the move — roughly 600 pips from Friday’s levels at one point — marks the second violent yen surge in seven weeks, and it has broken the carry trade’s spirit even if it hasn’t yet broken its back.

The anatomy of the move

Labor Day thinned US liquidity at exactly the wrong moment. Selling began in the Tokyo morning and accelerated through London, with the hallmarks of official-sector involvement: size without news, speed without headlines. Whether or not the Ministry of Finance confirms action, the market has voted — and its vote is that the yen’s decline has gone far enough.

The cross-market transmission was immediate. EUR/JPY plunged from 181 to below 178 in hours. AUD/JPY cratered. And tellingly, the dollar held firm elsewhere — EUR/USD is barely changed near 1.162, meaning this was a yen event, not a dollar event. For the second time this quarter, the world’s funding currency reminded everyone who funds whom.

What 152.90 means now

A level tested twice and held twice becomes the most important number in FX. Above it, the carry regime survives, wounded but functional — USD/JPY likely rebuilds toward 157–158 over coming weeks. Below it, the systematic deleveraging that follows broken double bottoms could take the pair to 148–150 faster than anyone’s models allow.

The BoJ meets later this month. Until then, the market’s message to carry traders is simple, and it’s the same message July delivered: your yield advantage doesn’t pay for this kind of drawdown.
