Yen Tops Out Near 164: Intervention Talk Gets Louder in Late July

July 24, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

The yen finally said “enough.”

After six weeks of relentless strength, the dollar topped out against the yen on Wednesday at 163.98 — just two pips shy of 164 — and sellers stepped in hard. USD/JPY has since pulled back to around 160.2, and the speed of the reversal has everyone asking the same question: was that official money?

Nobody knows yet, and Tokyo isn’t saying. But the fingerprints look familiar: the selling came during thin Asian liquidity, there was no news catalyst, and the move accelerated as it broke through 163.50. That’s how intervention tends to look in its first minutes, before the headlines catch up.

Even without intervention, the trade was stretched

Forget the politics for a second. The carry trade into USD/JPY had become one of the most crowded positions in FX. Positioning surveys showed speculators at multi-year highs in long-dollar-yen, and crowded trades don’t need a reason to unwind — they just need the buying to stop. A push to 164 that fails to extend is exactly what profit-taking looks like.

The euro has been a beneficiary of the dollar’s pause, recovering toward 1.1600 from 1.1520 earlier in the week. EUR/JPY, interestingly, has barely moved — confirming that this is yen strength at the margin, not dollar weakness.

What happens now

Two scenarios. One: Tokyo confirms or hints at action, and USD/JPY drops another 300–500 pips in a hurry as leveraged longs bail. Two: it was just profit-taking, the pair bases around 160, and the carry trade resumes its climb next month.

The range to watch is 158.50 on the downside — a break below that confirms this was more than a one-day shakeout. On the topside, 164.00 is now a triple-tested ceiling. The market doesn’t forget those quickly.
