The Yen’s Uneasy Calm: Why USD/JPY’s Quiet Worries Me

USD/JPY is trading at 158.57, up gently for the week, and the surface is calm. Underneath, I’m not so sure.

The calm before patterns

After two violent episodes in three months — July’s crash from 164 and September’s plunge to 152.90 — the pair has spent two weeks in a tight 157.6–158.8 range. Implied volatility has collapsed from its panic peaks. Everyone has relaxed.

That’s usually when the next move starts. Volatility is mean-reverting in clusters: quiet follows quiet until it suddenly doesn’t, and the September pattern — compressed range, cheap options, then a 500-pip air pocket — is sitting right there in the rearview mirror.

The BoJ meeting looms

The Bank of Japan meets before the end of the month, and the market is split. A meaningful minority expects the bank to nudge its policy guidance, which in yen terms could be worth hundreds of pips given how the carry trade is positioned. Even a hawkish sentence in the statement — no action required — could trigger another wave of carry liquidation.

Toppish officials in Tokyo have gone quiet since September, which historically is when they’re done warning and preparing to act, or when they’ve decided to let the market sort itself out. Neither reading is especially comforting for USD/JPY longs.

Positioning accordingly

The pair’s direction is genuinely two-sided: the rate gap argues for 160+, the policy tail risk argues for 152 again. In genuinely two-sided markets, the answer is smaller positions and longer horizons. If you’re long for the carry, accept that a 4% adverse move is a real possibility and size accordingly. If you’re short for the BoJ catalyst, accept that you’ll bleed yield every single day you’re early — and early is the base case.

Whichever side you’re on, own some options. This is not a spot-only market right now.
