Dollar-Yen Eyes 162 as the Carry Trade Gets Crowded

July 2, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

162.6. That’s where USD/JPY closed on Wednesday, and I had to double-check the screen because the last time we were here, the conversation was all about intervention.

The pair has rallied almost without pause since mid-June, climbing from 159.6 to its highest level of 2026. The engine is the same one that’s driven every big yen move in recent memory: investors borrowing cheap yen to fund purchases of higher-yielding dollars. It works beautifully until the day it doesn’t.

The quiet recovery across the board

The broader picture is worth noting. The euro has bounced off its June lows near 1.1354 and is trading around 1.1520, a recovery of roughly 1.5% that suggests the June selloff was more about the dollar than about Europe. EUR/JPY, meanwhile, is up near multi-year highs — a sign that this is very much a yen story, not a dollar story.

Sterling has stabilized around 1.3330 after its June slide, which tells me the pound’s drop was a sympathy move rather than a UK problem.

Intervention risk is real

Here’s the uncomfortable truth about being long USD/JPY at these levels: you are, functionally, betting against the Japanese Ministry of Finance. Tokyo tolerated the yen’s slide for a long time when it was gradual. The current pace — roughly 300 pips in three weeks — is the kind of move that historically provokes a response.

There’s no science to timing this. Officials act when they act. But if you’re chasing the move up here, understand that you can lose a week’s worth of gains in a single hour. I’ve seen it happen twice in the past three years.

Stops below 160.50 make sense for anyone long. And if you’re thinking of shorting the top — wait for the momentum to actually break first.
