Mid-Year Checkpoint: Dollar Consolidates, Yen Wilts, Euro Waits
The first week of the second half looks a lot like the last week of the first: the dollar consolidating its June gains while the market decides whether the trend has one more leg in it.
EUR/USD is parked at 1.1404, having spent a week oscillating between 1.1387 and 1.1463. USD/JPY at 161.88 is pressing against the June highs near 162. GBP/USD recovered to 1.3387, a solid bounce from the late-June panic low.
The standoff, explained
Both sides of the dollar trade have a legitimate case right now. The bulls point to the rate gap, the growth differential, and an intact trend. The bears point to extreme positioning, July seasonality, and a euro that refuses to make new lows despite every opportunity.
When both cases are this strong, markets usually resolve through time rather than price — long sideways stretches that frustrate everyone until some exogenous event forces a decision. Expect choppy, headline-driven trading for the next few weeks.
One cross worth your attention
EUR/JPY has been the stealth trade of the year, grinding from the low 180s in April to roughly 185 now. Long euro against the yen captures the dollar-yen carry while hedging some of the dollar’s overvaluation. It’s not riskless — no yen trade is — but it’s a smarter expression than naked USD/JPY at these levels.
Levels: EUR/USD 1.1379 below opens 1.1325; 1.1463 above opens 1.1520. USD/JPY 160.60 below is the warning for longs; 162.70 above accelerates the trend.
