Yen Slides Again as Carry Traders Reload Above 162

July 15, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

The yen’s June reprieve lasted exactly two weeks.

USD/JPY closed Monday at 162.51, up from 161.88 last week, with the pair touching 162.58 — the highest since the April spike. The sellers who showed up at the end of June have been absorbed, and the carry community has taken that as its cue to reload.

Why the dip got bought

Partly because nothing changed. US yields remain elevated, Japanese data remains mild, and the Bank of Japan remains patient. But partly because of positioning mechanics — the late-June pullback flushed out weak speculative longs, resetting the trade for a fresh push. Healthy trends need these resets. The alternative is a parabolic move that ends in tears.

The cross-market confirmation matters too. EUR/JPY pushed to 185.7, its highest level of the year, and even GBP/JPY joined in. When the entire yen complex rises together, it’s institutional flow, not retail noise.

The 163 question

April’s high sits at 163.98. Between here and there lies the last meaningful technical resistance before 165. If USD/JPY takes out 163.50 on a closing basis, I expect momentum funds to target 165 within weeks — and I expect the verbal intervention from Tokyo to get very loud very fast.

Stops on longs belong below 161.30. If you’re trading the short side, you need 163.50 to reject first — until then, you’re donating money to the carry trade, one day of yield at a time.
