Yen Slides Past 159 as the Rate-Gap Trade Comes Back

May 29, 2026 · Forex News · By Stock Golden Expert

USD/JPY is back above 159, and the reason is as old as the hills: yield differentials.

The pair has been climbing for three straight weeks — from 156.85 in early May to 159.3 by Thursday — and the pattern is familiar to anyone who traded the yen over the past two years. When the gap between what you earn holding dollars and what you earn holding yen stays wide, selling yen is essentially a trade that pays you to wait.

Why 160 matters

Psychologically, 160.00 is the line everyone is watching. The pair tagged 160.29 intraday back on April 28 and was slapped back within hours. Traders remember that. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see the same thing happen again — a quick spike toward 160 that gets sold hard by both speculators and, quite possibly, Japanese officials who have never been shy about jawboning when the yen gets cheap.

Japan’s finance ministry doesn’t announce intervention in advance. It just happens, usually on a quiet session, and the first sign is often a violent 200-pip drop with no headline attached.

The euro’s quiet breakdown

While everyone’s watching the yen, EUR/USD has been slipping almost unnoticed. From 1.1735 in mid-May the pair has drifted to about 1.1653, and the weekly candles show a series of lower highs going back to the start of the month. Nothing dramatic — but trends rarely start dramatically.

What I’d watch

If USD/JPY closes the week above 160, the carry crowd will pile in and 162 comes into play quickly. If it rejects again, the long-dollar trade gets crowded in a hurry. Position accordingly, and keep stops honest either way.
